Drug Rehab: Things You Should Know
Drug rehabilitation is the process by which a patient who has
developed a dependence on alcohol, drugs, etc, is treated to gradually lower and
terminate the dependency. Drug rehabilitation is popularly known as drug rehab.
Treatment process in
rehab
The patient is taught new methods to counteract the addiction
(drug dependency) by not socialising with people having the same tendencies and
to channel the flow of mind to other aspects of life. Once a person starts
using drugs it alters the chemical composition of the brain, which makes
treatment an integral part of rehab. most rehabs have staying quarters for the
patient to stay there for a couple of weeks to see that the treatment is not
stopped midway, which can cause relapse, i.e., back to dependency. This is the
reason why rehab takes so much time for some. However, patients are not forced
to stay there. The patients should come there with the intention of changing
their dependency. If it’s forced, it may have undesirable side effects. The
main methods employed are:
·
Counselling:
making the patient aware of the plight he is in and offering assistance to help
him get out of the dependency
·
Treatment:
doctors prescribe the needed anti-addiction medications that will counter the
withdrawal symptoms and relapses.
·
Group
counselling: Mostly involves discussions between similar patients about the
negative aspects of drug abuse etc.,
·
After
recovery counselling: This is given to people who have successfully completed
the rehab therapy to make them encourage not to follow this path ever again.
